Italy leads the conversation on sustainable navigation at the London Embassy

The Italian Embassy in London hosted the first in a series of discussions on sustainable navigation, aiming to promote innovative practices for ocean conservation and a more sustainable future. Organized by the Embassy’s Maritime Office, the event—titled "Towards Sustainability: Greener Seas for a Better Tomorrow"—brought together leading experts from academia, industry, and international organizations.

The debate focused on the challenges and opportunities within the maritime sector, with particular attention to the latest advancements in sustainability. Key topics included the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable ballast water management, and the fight against plastic pollution.

"Today, more than ever, sustainability is not an option but a necessity," stated Ambassador Inigo Lambertini. "Maritime navigation must evolve to reduce its environmental impact by adopting innovative solutions and responsible practices. Italy is proud to contribute to this global effort, working alongside the International Maritime Organization to develop effective strategies for reducing emissions and protecting our oceans. Only through collaboration between institutions, industry, and the scientific community can we build a greener and safer future for our seas and future generations."

Among the speakers, Professor Elda Belja from the International Maritime Law Institute in Malta and Professor Monica Canepa from the World Maritime University in Malmö shared their research on the role of alternative fuels and the importance of advanced technologies in improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
