“Toys for Tots”: Italy Donates Toys to Sudanese Children

12 April 2016. On April 10, the Italian Embassy in Khartoum, together with International Voluntary Welfare Group (IVWG), distributed more than 700 toys in boys’ and girls’ orphanages in the city, as well as at a women’s prison, in its “Toys for Tots” initiative. IVWG is a Sudanese volunteer association that has been working since 1965 to support the neediest. The event began with a benefit event at Casa d’Italia, the official residence of Italian Ambassador Fabrizio Lobasso. Each of the more than 300 attendees was requested to bring a toy for needy Sudanese children. “The joy of putting a child on a child’s face is endless. It carries a universal message of inclusion, which our diplomacy promotes in Sudan and beyond,” said Lobasso, during the first give-away, which took place at the Dat Altaebat penitentiary close to Omdurman, in the Khartoum region. Overview: Training and Inclusion

The Dat Altaebat penitentiary currently houses approximately 630 women inmates, and nearly one hundred of their children. Within the institution, various courses and training sessions are on periodic offer, providing inmates a chance to learn a craft and rebuild their lives after completing their sentences. “We must organize an Italian training session here as well,” said Ambassador Lobasso, “hopefully in Autumn, and involving cooking. It would be wonderful to contribute, as a country and as individuals, to a better future for so many of these women.”
