Exile And Creativity Series

(2 October 2018) The series "Exile and Creativity" continues at the Italian Institute of Culture in New York with an event dedicated to Corrado Cagli and Costantino Nivola, two artists who left fascist Italy for America and whose experience of exile became a starting point for reflecting on art, the interconnectedness of cultures, and on creativity. The event (speakers Giuliana Altea and Raffaele Bedarida) will be held on October 9th.  Costantino Nivola and Corrado Cagli came from very different backgrounds. Nivola, son of a mason, from rural Sardinia, Cagli was born into an assimilated Jewish family originally from Ancona and Rome. What unites them is being part of a minority and their enthusiasm for participation in public life through the languages of art. While Cagli successfully integrated into the fascist cultural world, Nivola navigated, with equal success, in a context of mild political dissent.  In 1938, the promulgation of the racial laws pushed them both to America. Cagli had suffered ostracism because of his Jewish origin and Nivola had friction with the regime because of its anti-fascist inclinations.
