Nairobi - The documentary “Shoes”, written and directed by Giuseppe Carrieri with the support of UNICEF Italy, was previewed at the Giffoni Film Festival and received high praise from the audience, who requested more insights into the messages conveyed by the film.
“Shoes” is set during a deep night in Nairobi,” says director Giuseppe Carrieri. K. and Peter are two young boys surviving in Kibera, selling items recovered from one of the largest landfills on the African continent. “The key word in this film is friendship,” continues Carrieri. “It is a fundamental and very strong value in this fragile network of childhood on the streets and in the dumps. Friendship creates a powerful superpower: that of imagination.”
K.'s dream is to make his only friend, who has always been in a wheelchair, walk again. To achieve this, they will need a pair of magical shoes. Regarding the character of Peter Parker, the director comments, “He is a unique character. He references Spiderman because spiders are known for their patience, the ability to weave a web. Additionally, spiders climb and construct a vertical view of existence. In this film, the children have an unconscious ambition to climb into a world larger than themselves. This was important because it’s an ambition that everyone should have.”
