Kachupa, from Piedmont to Africa for music and solidarity

Jan. 30 - Music, solidarity, development and integration are the ingredients used by Kachupa, a Piedmont band (with Lidiya Koycheva, Davide Borra, Alberto Santoru, Mattia Floris, Corrado "Hannibal" Vergano). For years, they’ve been on the road spreading their passion for traditional Mediterranean music, from Puglia to the Balkans. But one of their aims has always been to spread solidarity with Africa: “promoting development through music is possible. - explain Kachupa - We were born as street artists, we toured Europe with a magical and surreal show. Now we go on stage, we produce albums and theater plays, we write books all with the same goal: unite distant traditions, foods, scents and colors of different ethnic groups. Together with our singer Lidiya Koycheva, who is from Bulgaria, we dream a type of integration that does not destroy differences, but let’s us live them with pride." Soon Kachupa, who sold about 5000 records in Italy and France, will be on radio with a new single taken from the last album, "Terzo Binario." From Friday, Feb. 1 radios will air "Marrakech", a song "inspired by the shouting and confusion of real life in a market place full of ideas, humanity, and words, to discover the roots of all relationships.” Meanwhile, Terzo Binario" is on sale in traditional stores and major digital stores. In the album (Incipit Records - distr. Egea Music), Kachupa summarize years of experience on the road and large stages, tradition and modernity, in a blend of sounds. The album, mixed by Carlo Miori at the '"Only Music Studio" Bruino and mastered by Steve Fallone at the "Sterling Studio" in New York, boasts the participation of Roy Paci in the song "El Chupitero." In the box there is also the book "Se la Tartaruga S'Abbronza " (edited by Mauro Borra), which has a foreword by Carlo Petrini and Gianmaria Testa. The book traces, with lightness and irony, the particular history of the band and of the many artists they met around the world. Kachupa are also ambassadors of the "Thousand Gardens in Africa" by Slow Food. Part of the proceeds from their album sales is donated for the realization of gardens that protect biodiversity and represent a community experience for different generations and different social contexts.

KACHUPA: A PARTICULAR BAND

Kachupa is a typical dish of Cape Verde with vegetables, fruits, legumes, cereals and fish, simple ingredients but rich in vitamins and life. Kachupa’s energy is born from this simple soup, a symbol of simplicity and love for nature. The Kachupa Folk Band began as an on the road band, especially around Europe. In the beginning, around Europe, the drummer played on cans and pots on a small cart, with the other musicians around the caravan. This magic allowed the band to sell about 5,000 records in Italy and France. In 2006, they released "Gabrovo Express", awarded by Radio Popolare Network as best self-produced album of 2006 and consequently given in free copy with the magazine "World Music Magazine". The band then began performing at prestigious festivals, sharing the stage with important artists, participating in various television shows, but continuing with street performances that become fairy-tale like and sometimes surreal. In 2011, Kachupa won the "Sanremo Village" and "CartaSI Area Sanremo" prizes; while in 2012 they were proclaimed "The Absolute 2012" winning first prize at '"Inedited World Music Festival" in Rimini and a production in London in Bluey Maunick’s studios, guitarist, founder and producer of the band "Incognito."
