Researchers analyze COP30 decisions and climate insights from the Amazon

Belém – Researchers from Unimore and the Geophysical Observatory of the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering will discuss their experiences and analyze the outcomes of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), held in November in Belém, on the edge of the Amazon rainforest.
The public event, titled “Unimore at COP30 – Belém, Brazil: What Happened in the Amazon, Challenges and Results of the Paris Agreement Negotiations”, will take place on December 17 at 5:15 p.m. in classroom P2.4 at the Enzo Ferrari Engineering Department in Modena.
As part of the “Amazon & Heat: Community-First Climate–Environment–Health Action from the Amazon Basin to Africa & Europe” initiative at the Italian Pavilion, the importance of long-term observations by the Modena Geophysical Observatory and tropical data from the Italy–Costa Rica station was highlighted. Professor Sergio Teggi, Scientific Director of the Observatory, explained that historical Modena data, combined with observations from Costa Rica and Monte Cimone, provide essential insights for global climate understanding.
While COP30 introduced measures on forests, rights, and adaptation, fossil fuels were not addressed, illustrating the gap between scientific recommendations and negotiation outcomes, a gap Unimore aims to bridge in future conferences.
