New York – The photographic exhibition by Italian artist Carmela Rizzuti has come to a close in New York, where it was hosted at the Artifact Projects gallery. The Sicilian artist is known for a distinctive visual research that unfolds in a suspended space between imagination and perception, memory and matter. This poetic tension prompted the New York gallery to showcase her work, which drew significant interest from both international visitors and critics.
The projection of Rizzuti’s photographs took place in the Lower East Side, guiding viewers through an immersive experience in which images appeared as luminous, transient presences, constantly shifting and evolving. Female forms—central to the artist’s practice—emerged from the light only to dissolve again, suggesting rather than describing, and inviting a slow, contemplative gaze.
Rizzuti’s visual language is shaped by the fusion of two modes of seeing: an inner, imaginative vision and a gaze rooted in concrete experience and material reality. The tension between these dimensions gives rise to symbolic images that evoke an ongoing dialogue between spirit and matter, form and substance, without ever settling into a definitive synthesis.
The dreamlike quality of the work is amplified by the use of projection, which enhances the evanescent nature of the figures and their perceptual instability. Distant echoes of the ancient world—drapery, bodily fragments, gestures and postures—surface like visual memories before retreating once more into the interplay of light and shadow. Color and tonal variations, handled with great sensitivity, lend the images an almost tactile quality, despite their immaterial essence.
Through a process that draws on the unconscious, Rizzuti dismantles habitual ways of seeing and invites the audience into a renewed visual experience, where photography becomes time, movement and presence.
