Italian and French land associations join forces for new mountain agriculture

Italian and French land associations are joining forces to bring new life to abandoned areas in mountain regions. Through a territorial development strategy involving municipalities, mountain unions, Green Communities, and internal areas, these organizations aim to enhance agricultural potential on fragmented slopes.
Originating in France over twenty years ago, land associations have become part of Italy’s rural framework over the last decade, starting in Piedmont. Where agricultural land is highly fragmented, usable area decreases, limiting productivity. The ASFO project, part of the cross-border Alcotra initiative, involves the Metropolitan City of Turin, Uncem Piemonte, the University of Turin’s Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Food Sciences, and French partners including the Union Régionale des Associations de Communes Forestières and the Centre National de la Propriété Forestière.
Cofinanced by the EU Interreg Alcotra program, the project aims to reduce the risks and impacts of climate change by improving the management of natural and agroforestry resources in rural areas. This involves implementing shared tools and strategies to rehabilitate abandoned lands, consolidate plots, and enable coordinated and community-driven land management.
“Uncem has always believed in land associations,” explains Roberto Colombero, president of Uncem Piemonte. “They are one of the most significant innovations in Italian mountain regions over the last twenty years, fostering community spirit in the rehabilitation of slopes and territories. Piedmont has led the way with regulations and financial support, and now, working alongside the French Alps, we are strengthening cross-border strategies and synergies.”
