Kraków – The all-female film series “Kobiety reżyserki – Women Directors” opened in March and will run through the end of April in Kraków. Organized by the Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with Cinema Kika, the program features a selection of eight films directed by prominent Italian women filmmakers, offering a perspective on women’s contributions to Italian cinema from the 1970s to today. It was precisely in that decade – marked by profound social and cultural changes in Italy, from workers’ and student movements to the rise of feminism and referendums on divorce and abortion – that women began to emerge in cinema with a new, independent voice, capable of portraying reality from a different perspective. Women’s cinema introduced new sensibilities, aesthetics, and ways of questioning the world: a language that gives space to doubt before action, to care as a political act, to sensuality as resistance, and to self-exploration as a form of knowledge. Alongside historical figures such as Liliana Cavani and Lina Wertmüller, the series includes established directors like Cristina Comencini, Francesca Archibugi, Roberta Torre, Antonietta De Lillo, and Alice Rohrwacher, and pays tribute to Elvira Notari, the first Italian female director, screenwriter, and producer of international significance. Upcoming screenings include April 12 with Il resto di niente by Antonietta De Lillo, April 19 with Il grande cocomero by Francesca Archibugi, and April 26 with La Chimera by Alice Rohrwacher.
