Shanghai – The exhibition (Un)masked. Sino-Italian Contemporary Photography Exhibition will open on April 10 at the Duolun Museum of Modern Art. Curated by Francesco D’Arelli, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Shanghai, and Zeng Yulan, Director of the Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art and Vice President of the Shanghai Art Museum Association, the show will run until July 12. It features more than one hundred works, including photographs, videos, and installations by ten artists or collectives active in the contemporary photography scene, creating an intercultural dialogue between five Italian and five Chinese artists. Centered on the theme of the face, (Un)masked presents works that offer direct testimony of diverse ways of living across different social, cultural, and geographical contexts. Moving beyond traditional portraiture, the artists capture some of the most authentic expressions of human existence. The face—rarely covered except in specific circumstances dictated by traditions, cultures, customs, habits, or sometimes imposed rules—becomes the primary expression of individual identity and the original source of social recognition. The face represents society, community, and human interaction—the visible essence of humanity itself. (9colonne)
