Fulvio Conti: the only Italian business leader at the G20

Sept. 6 - "Ensuring that everyone has access to modern energy systems will require an investment for the most innovative technologies" said Fulvio Conti, Enel’s CEO and General Manager in front of the Heads of State and Government at the G20. He was the only Italian business leader allowed to speak at the event, held this morning in St. Petersburg. Conti met the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and other Heads of State and Government in the second and last day of the summit. The summit – hosted for the first time by the Russian presidency – opened yesterday, with political leaders gathering for their annual summit focused on economic growth and employment. Better access to energy, communications and health care are the recommendations that Conti, who co-chaired the B20 Task Force dedicated to "Innovation and Development as a Global Priority," put forth. With regard to energy issues, Conti emphasized the need to achieve a stable and harmonized regulatory framework to ensure open markets, enabling a balanced mix of technologies that will enhance reliability, innovation and sustainability. "To ensure that everyone has access to modern energy systems, $1000 billion investments will be needed for the most innovative technologies by 2030," said Enel’s managing director, a group that is one of the leading operators in the fields electricity and gas in Europe and Latin America. " Such an amount of investments will require opening markets and eliminating distorting measures such as inefficient subsidies. Government rules should be stable and long-lasting, so that they can reassure and incentivize the private sector to invest in key areas." The Enel Group is now present in 40 countries on 4 continents, working in the field of power generation with a net installed capacity of 98 GW and distributing electricity and gas to 61 million customers through a network of 1.9 million kilometers.
