Rome – Giorgio Silli, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, spoke today at Italy’s first national conference titled “The Arctic: National Defense and the Country System Amid Global Competition,” hosted by Undersecretary of Defense Isabella Rauti at the Center for Advanced Defense Studies in Rome.
In his address, Silli announced that Italy is finalizing an updated Arctic policy document to replace the 2015 framework. The new strategy, developed collaboratively among ministries, research institutions, and public agencies, aims to provide an integrated, forward-looking vision that builds on Italy’s scientific and historical expertise while responding to emerging global challenges.
“Our approach to the Arctic,” Silli explained, “is grounded in essential principles: respect for the sovereignty of Arctic states and for international maritime law, protection of indigenous communities, preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems, promotion of scientific cooperation as a tool of peace and diplomacy, and support for economic and entrepreneurial interests within a framework of sustainability.”
