Avignon – The Italian Cultural Institute of Marseille is supporting the participation of Italian actress and director Daria Deflorian at the Avignon Festival with her production What a Terrible Pain Love Is (Quelle douleur terrible est l'amour). The performance will run from July 12 to 18 at the Cloître des Carmes Theatre and is based on We Do Not Part, the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Han Kang. Moving between the worlds of the living and the dead, dreams and friendship, the story explores the memory of a forgotten and long-denied massacre. In the novel, Han Kang revisits one of the darkest chapters of Korean history: the brutal suppression of the Jeju uprising in 1948. Deflorian's adaptation engages deeply with the text, sharing the author's refusal to reduce human tragedy to place names and casualty figures. Instead, it invites audiences to confront the fragility of human existence and the enduring presence of historical trauma.
