“Light from Italy: From Fattori to Morandi” named exhibition of the year in Latvia

Riga – The catalogue of Light from Italy: From Fattori to Morandi, one of the most significant cultural events of recent years in Latvia, will be presented in Florence on June 16. The exhibition brought together, for the first time, a major selection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Italian masterpieces from the Uffizi Galleries with key works of Latvian art spanning the late nineteenth century through the era of classical modernism. Hosted by the Latvian National Museum of Art in Riga, the exhibition explored light as a shared artistic language and a point of connection between different cultural traditions. Organized into six thematic and chronological sections, the exhibition examined how artists from both countries used light as an aesthetic principle and expressive tool, creating a dialogue across national and historical boundaries. Published by Treccani in a trilingual edition featuring texts in Italian, Latvian and English, the richly illustrated catalogue expands upon the exhibition’s themes while documenting a landmark collaboration that combines art historical research, cultural diplomacy and the promotion of Europe’s shared heritage. The volume includes institutional contributions, scholarly essays and more than 100 research entries dedicated to works from the collections of the two museums, written by leading Italian and Latvian experts. On June 1, the exhibition received the Latvian Museum Association’s 2026 Annual Award, selected from 52 candidates as Exhibition of the Year in recognition of its achievements in research, collection interpretation and international cooperation. The jury included philosophers, art historians, architects and museum directors. The catalogue will be presented to the public on June 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Antonio Paolucci Auditorium of the Uffizi Galleries. Speakers will include Uffizi Director Simone Verde, Treccani Director General Massimo Bray, Uffizi curators Elena Marconi and Vanessa Gavioli, and Guicciardo Sassoli de’ Bianchi Strozzi, president of Associazione Nuova Artemarea ETS and curator of both the exhibition and the catalogue.
