Dakar – Until 2 October, visitors to Dakar can explore Connexions Urbaines, an exhibition hosted at the Italian Cultural Institute that brings together contemporary art, urban culture and digital innovation. Curated by Bonobolabo, an Italian organisation internationally recognised for its research at the intersection of art, design and new technologies, the exhibition features 23 artistic skateboard decks created over more than thirteen years of collaborations with contemporary artists. In a Dakar increasingly shaped by new urban energies, the project sits at the crossroads of art, skateboarding and contemporary visual culture. It also connects with the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which will establish skateboarding as a discipline closely associated with urban cultures, while creating a dialogue with Festigraff, one of West Africa’s leading street art events, and Partcours’ Saison Sèche, a major annual celebration of contemporary art in the city. The artworks, created by prominent figures from the Italian art scene, transform skateboards into innovative expressive surfaces, challenging the traditional boundaries between artwork and everyday object. Thanks to augmented reality technology, the boards come to life: using smartphones and tablets, visitors can access digital content that animates the artworks, creating an immersive and interactive experience. The aim of the project is to bring contemporary art closer to the public, especially younger generations, through an accessible and multidisciplinary language that combines art, sport and technology.
