Chimoio – The Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa is coordinating a major three-year initiative aimed at promoting resilient, sustainable and inclusive agri-food systems in Mozambique's Manica Province. Known as CAAM-Produzione – Sustainable and Inclusive Agricultural Production within the CAAM System (AID 013377), the project is funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) with a total budget of €5 million. Officially launched in Chimoio on 13 July, it seeks to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen food security and support the livelihoods of rural communities. Working closely with Mozambican institutions, the programme will encourage sustainable agroecological farming practices, improve water resource management and enhance the skills of farmers and local institutions, helping communities adapt to the impacts of climate change. The initiative forms part of the territorial development strategy of the Manica Agri-Food Centre (CAAM), supporting the integration of small-scale producers and their organisations into a future network of Agri-Hubs and the regional agri-food centre. Coordinated by Professor Matteo Dell’Acqua, the project draws on the multidisciplinary expertise of several Sant’Anna School institutes, including the Institutes of Plant Sciences, Economics and Dirpolis, as well as the Centre for Sustainability and Climate. It also contributes to Africa Connect, the university's interdisciplinary programme designed to strengthen and coordinate the research and training activities that its teams have carried out across Africa for more than a decade. Project partners include the International Committee for the Development of Peoples (CISP), the Canale Emiliano Romagnolo, and Mozambique's National Irrigation Institute. Implementation will also involve the Mozambican Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, the Government of Manica Province, district authorities, research and training institutions, and producer organisations operating in the target areas.
