Czech screenings highlight Sardinian documentaries on migration and soli-darity

Prague – Two documentaries showcasing a welcoming and solidary Sardinia are making a double appearance in the Czech Republic: first in the capital city of Prague on October 8, followed by Olomouc - a historic Moravian university town - on Octo-ber 9. The screenings continue an international tour that has brought these works to diverse audiences and cultural organizations across several countries in recent months.

On Thursday, October 8, at 7:30 PM, Donne in Avanti (Women Moving Forward) will screen at Mama Shelter in Prague. Organized in partnership with Lingua Nostra - a Prague-based cultural association dedicated to promoting Italian language and cul-ture - the film portrays Sardinia as a land of fresh starts through the personal jour-neys of four women who arrived from afar. Their stories weave together migration, work, relationships, hardships, and opportunities, offering a fresh lens on the is-land through those who chose it to build their futures.
On Friday, October 9, at 4:30 PM, the Department of Romance Languages within the Faculty of Arts at Palacký University in Olomouc will host a screening of Le Cicogne di Chernobyl (The Storks of Chernobyl). Through first-hand accounts, the documen-tary reconstructs the extraordinary wave of hospitality that emerged following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Across Italy, the humanitarian effort welcomed over 700,000 children from affected regions - more than 20,000 of whom were hosted in Sardinia - creating human bonds that have lasted for decades.
Directed by Karim Galici, both films were spearheaded and produced by the Caglia-ri-based organization Cittadini del Mondo, in collaboration with RAI Sardegna and RAI Teche, and with financial support from the Fondazione di Sardegna.
Together, the two events offer distinct yet complementary perspectives on Sardinia: the lived experiences of four women building new lives, and the local families who opened their homes to children from Chernobyl. Through documentary cinema, these narratives foster dialogue and cross-cultural understanding.
The screenings form part of the "Rete di interconnessioni sociali" ("Social Intercon-nections Network") initiative, promoted by the Cittadini del Mondo ODV associa-tion with backing from the Fondazione di Sardegna, which also funded the films. The project develops and expands partnerships among community groups, cultur-al institutions, and universities across Sardinia, Italy, and abroad.
