Fighting desertification and climate change: UniPa among LIFE Award Winners

Brussels – The University of Palermo (UniPa) is among the partners of the project LIFE Desert-Adapt – Preparing desertification areas for increased climate change, which has won the “Climate Action” category at the 2025 LIFE Awards. The competition, promoted by the European Commission, celebrates outstanding initiatives in nature conservation, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience.
“This year’s nine finalists represent some of the most creative and impactful projects working towards a greener Europe,” said Prof. Paola Quatrini, project manager for LIFE Desert-Adapt at UniPa. Coordinated by the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, the project includes 19 partners and focuses on combating desertification by engaging local farmers and municipalities in rural areas of Sicily, Spain, and Portugal. The initiative implements adaptation strategies aimed at improving soil quality, enhancing water retention capacity, and increasing ecosystem resilience to climate change.
