Humanitarian diplomacy in action: Cyprus thanks Italy's Misericordie for Gaza relief effort

Nicosia – During the celebration of Saint John the Baptist, patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Cyprus’s Deputy Minister for Migration, Nicholas A. Ioannides, expressed heartfelt thanks to Italy’s Misericordie for coordinating the delivery of over 80 tons of essential supplies destined for the people of Gaza.
The aid shipment—already transferred to Cyprus under the international humanitarian mechanism “Amalthea”—has yet to reach Gaza due to ongoing restrictions. During the Mass, Apostolic Nuncio to Cyprus, Archbishop Giampietro Dal Toso, recalled the words of Pope Leo XIII on the power of love for the poor as a testament of faith.
This operation, made possible through the combined efforts of the Misericordie, the Embassy of the Order of Malta in Cyprus, and several partners—including Unicoop Firenze, the Italian Ministry of Defense, and the Joint Operations Command (COVI)—is a compelling example of humanitarian diplomacy and international cooperation.
“This project is the result of a solidarity network connecting institutions, volunteers, and citizens,” said Domenico Giani, President of the Misericordie. “The recognition we’ve received inspires us to keep a close eye on the fate of these supplies and to continue our humanitarian work in Palestine and beyond—bringing a peace that is unarmed yet disarming.”
