Mediterranean diet in focus at Spanish-Italian nutrition event

Madrid – The Mediterranean diet, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, took center stage at a recent Italo-Spanish event hosted at the Italian Consulate in Madrid. The gathering, jointly organized by the Italian Embassy in Spain, the Italian Trade Agency, and the National Agrifood Cluster, in collaboration with the Food for Life platform network, brought together leading researchers and nutritionists for a renewed push to promote a sustainable and modern Mediterranean diet.
A roundtable discussion featured prominent voices in nutrition and science: Maria D. Ballesteros-Pomar (University Hospital of León), Daniela Martini (University of Milan), Alicia Moreno Ortega (University of Córdoba), and Cinzia Menchise (Director of Specialized Nutrition and Dietary Supplements – Unione Italiana Food, and Scientific Committee member – CL.A.N. Cluster). The panel addressed current challenges and strategies for making the Mediterranean diet more accessible and appealing, highlighting the key role of food research and innovation alongside cultural heritage and tradition.
