“The Room of Mnemosyne” explores migration and integration in Germany

Cologne – “The Room of Mnemosyne,” an exhibition by Alessandra Calò, continues at the Italian Cultural Institute in Cologne until January 30. Inspired by the DOMiD archive, which preserves objects and testimonies of migration in Germany, the exhibition creates a poetic and visual journey on the theme of memory. Through a public call, the project incorporated new objects, anecdotes, and interviews with second- and third-generation migrants, giving voice to personal stories that reflect a collective experience. Named after the Greek goddess of memory, Mnemosyne, the exhibition invites visitors to reflect on the significance of objects as carriers of emotions, identities, and often forgotten experiences. The project presents a nuanced view of Italian migration in Germany, moving beyond the historical figure of the Gastarbeiter and addressing contemporary questions of integration and cultural heritage. The installation was curated to mark the 70th anniversary of the 1955 Italy-Germany agreement on Italian labor recruitment in the Federal Republic of Germany.
