“Antarctica, the White Continent”: Italian scientific exhibition travels from Rome to Guatemala

Guatemala City – As part of the project “Italy and Guatemala in Antarctica,” the National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and the Italian Cultural Institute in Guatemala City are presenting a selection from the scientific exhibition “Antarctica, the White Continent. 40 Years of Italian Research.” The exhibition will be open to the public from 28 January to 27 February at Universidad del Valle in Guatemala City.
The exhibition - conceived and produced by the CNR in collaboration with the National Scientific Commission for Antarctica, the National Antarctic Museum, the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), and the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics, with contributions from researchers from other Italian institutions and universities involved in Antarctic research - arrives in Guatemala in a reduced format after its successful showing in Rome.
The original exhibition was hosted at the CNR headquarters in Rome to mark the 40th anniversary of Italy’s presence in Antarctica through the National Antarctic Research Program. It attracted significant public interest, welcoming 3,631 visitors over 29 days, from 2 December to 23 January, confirming its role as an important opportunity for scientific outreach and dialogue, particularly with younger generations.
The presentation of this exhibition extract marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between Italy and Guatemala in various scientific fields and Antarctic-related topics. Although Guatemala is a signatory to the Antarctic Treaty and does not maintain research bases on the continent, it participates in Antarctic research projects coordinated by IPOGUA (the Guatemalan Polar Institute). The country has shown strong interest in Antarctic scientific research and recognizes Italy’s experience as among the most specialized and pioneering in the field.
