St. Petersburg – “Viva Verdi! From Nabucco to Otello” is the title of a podcast produced by the Italian Cultural Institutes in Russia and available at https://vivaverdi.vashdosug.ru/it/ in a bilingual Italian-Russian version. Eight Italian musicologists from the Ugo and Olga Levi Music Foundation in Venice have prepared a series of materials for the Italian Cultural Institutes in Moscow and St. Petersburg, in which the figure of Giuseppe Verdi is examined from various perspectives, sometimes unfamiliar to Russian listeners. Audiences will discover which abbreviation lies behind the composer’s surname and why he was called “the maestro of the Italian revolution.” With a leap through time, listeners will find themselves in Verdi’s studio and see which techniques made his music immortal. Three podcast episodes dedicated to Verdi’s presence in Russia trace the cultural ties between the two countries in the 19th century and reconstruct the Italian composer’s contribution to the history of Russian opera. The group of Italian musicologists also explains how the composer’s work went beyond the boundaries of the theater, charting his path from lesser-known works to those that have become part of world cultural heritage.
