New York – The third appointment of the Italy Walk will take place on April 23 at 5:45 p.m., organized by the Italian Cultural Institute: guided walks through New York in the company of journalists and authors Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi, discovering statues and monuments inspired by Italy or created by Italian artists. From the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, participants will enter Central Park and, walking along “The Mall,” will reach the Bethesda Fountain, above which hovers the Angel of the Waters, created in Rome by the New York artist Emma Stebbins. The fountain will be closed for renovation for a couple of years starting in June: the official responsible for the maintenance and restoration of Central Park monuments will explain all about the works to participants. The route will then include a stop to pay tribute to the statue of Giuseppe Mazzini, hero of the Italian Risorgimento, created by Italian sculptor Giovanni Turini. At Columbus Circle, there will be a discussion of the monument to Christopher Columbus, by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo, as well as the USS Maine National Monument at the park’s Merchants’ Gate entrance, carved in the Bronx by Italian artist Attilio Piccirilli. The group will cross the park to the Native Meadow and exit onto Fifth Avenue at 67th Street. The walk is expected to last about two hours, covering a distance of approximately 4 kilometers.
