On June 3, the Italian Cultural Institute in Stuttgart will host a conference titled “The 1946 Referendum and Women’s First Participation in Voting”, presented in Italian by Vittorio Prada of the University of Tübingen. The event will revisit the historic days following Italy’s institutional referendum of June 2–3, 1946, when Italians were called to choose between monarchy and republic after the end of World War II and two decades of dictatorship. Particular attention will be given to the referendum’s significance in the history of Italian citizenship and democracy. For the first time, women were allowed to participate in a national political election, marking a profound social and political transformation for the country. The presentation will include historical photographs, film excerpts, music, and literary texts to illustrate the atmosphere and historical importance of a moment that reshaped modern Italy.
