Tokyo – On September 3, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) hosted at its headquarters in Rome a Japanese delegation led by Senator Aoki Kazuhiko for a meeting focused on research, monitoring and volcanic risk prevention. The meeting was attended by INGV Earthquake Department director Salvatore Stramondo and Tsunami Warning Center coordinator Stefano Lorito, as well as Etna Observatory director Salvatore Gambino and Volcanology Functional Unit head Letizia Spampinato, who joined remotely from the Catania operations room. The meeting provided an opportunity to examine INGV's role within Italy's national volcanic research system, with particular attention to activities carried out during eruptions, the dissemination of information and the support provided to institutions and the public. Discussions with the Japanese delegation also addressed INGV's contribution to the development of emergency plans at both national and local levels, cooperation with universities and other research institutions, and international collaboration with countries characterized by a high concentration of volcanoes. The visit provided an opportunity to compare the two countries' experience in volcanic research and risk management and to continue scientific dialogue between Italy and Japan, including through the development of future joint activities.
