Beijing – Chinese Voices on Palladio. From Classical Architecture to Contemporary Experiment, the second exhibition in China devoted to the legacy of Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, will remain open to the public in Beijing through October 11. Promoted by the Italian Embassy in Beijing and the Italian Cultural Institute, the exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Department of Architecture and Design at the Polytechnic University of Turin and the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, with the support of the Italian Encyclopedia Institute Treccani. Conceived as an ideal dialogue between Palladio’s theoretical and architectural legacy and contemporary Chinese architectural thinking, the exhibition brings together 14 leading contemporary Chinese architects, invited to engage with Palladian ideas through installations, drawings, models and works created specifically for the exhibition. The project highlights Palladio’s ability to provide critical and conceptual tools for interpreting and rethinking themes in contemporary architecture. At the heart of the exhibition are questions surrounding the relationship between architecture and landscape, the dialogue between tradition and innovation, the human dimension of built space, and the pursuit of harmony as an organising principle. The exhibition also explores ideas of connection and exchange through photographic diptychs by Lois Conner, which juxtapose Palladian architecture with photographs of Chinese landscapes in an imagined conversation about landscape and memory, past and present. The final section, Echoes in the Contemporary, brings the exhibition to a close with works by prominent Italian contemporary artists including Pietro Ruffo, Davide Bramante, Luca Pozzi, Matteo Basilé and Davide Sebastian.
