Buenos Aires – To mark the bicentenary of Carlo Collodi’s birth, the Italian Cultural Institute in Buenos Aires is presenting an exhibition devoted to the famous puppet created by the Italian writer. Entitled Pinocchio: una metafora contemporanea (Pinocchio: A Contemporary Metaphor), the exhibition brings together 200 posters by artists and designers from different countries, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of one of the best-known characters in Italian literature. The collection features works selected from an international poster design competition organised by the Magma Museum in Civitanova Marche to mark Collodi’s bicentenary. The open call invited designers and artists from a range of backgrounds to offer their own interpretations of Pinocchio from a contemporary perspective. The exhibition spans two venues linked by a common conceptual thread. The Italian Cultural Institute’s Sala Roma houses all 200 posters, displayed on the walls and in suspended installations. Open from 28 October to 28 January, the exhibition begins symbolically with a fragment of wood, accompanied by the words with which Collodi opens his famous story: “Once upon a time there was a piece of wood”. From 30 November, the exhibition will continue at the Teatro Coliseo, where the transformation from a piece of wood into a puppet reaches its symbolic fulfilment. Making its debut outside Italy, the exhibition celebrates not only the enduring relevance of Collodi’s work, but also the power of the poster as a medium for communication, artistic expression and ideas.
