Edinburgh – The Italian Clapperboard documentary series continues on Thursday 10 December at 5.30 pm at the Italian Cultural Institute in Edinburgh with Dacia, vita mia – Dialoghi giapponesi (Japanese Dialogues), directed by Izumi Chiaraluce. An intimate journey through Rome and Japan in search of memory, Dacia, vita mia – Dialoghi giapponesi weaves together Dacia Maraini’s voice, archival footage, drawings that fade in and out, and encounters that illuminate a life shaped by two cultures. The director, a quiet yet engaged witness, brings together the threads of a story that is both personal and collective: childhood in snow-covered Japan, internment in a prison camp, art as a form of resistance, her parents’ legacy, her sister Yuki, theatre and books. Maraini’s words become a bridge between distant worlds, connecting past and present. The result is an intimate and revealing portrait, shaped by the unhurried pace of memory and the vibrant rhythm of curiosity. It is a tribute to a woman whose writing, photography and commitment to dialogue have helped her make a home of her own. (9colonne)
