Barcelona – "Friuli Venezia Giulia comes to one of the world's premier urban innovation events presenting initiatives that demonstrate how digital transformation drives regional development. From connectivity in remote inland areas to urban regeneration, we are investing in emerging technologies to build new services and opportunities for citizens, businesses, and public administrations."
The statement was delivered by Sebastiano Callari, Regional Minister for Information Systems of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Barcelona, where yesterday - November 3 - he attended the opening of the Region's exhibition booth at the Smart City Expo World Congress 2026, held at Fira Barcelona Gran Via through November 5. Callari led the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the regional space, which highlights major projects developed by Friuli Venezia Giulia in advanced connectivity and digital-driven urban renewal. Also attending the ceremony were Insiel President Diego Antonini and representatives from the region's main cities: Mayor of Gorizia Rodolfo Ziberna with Council Member Sarah Filisetti, Council Member Michele Babuder from the Municipality of Trieste, and Council Member Gea Arcella from the Municipality of Udine.
"Our presence in Barcelona," Callari explained, "allows us to engage with public administrations, enterprises, and research institutions from around the globe while showcasing what Friuli Venezia Giulia is achieving. Technology truly delivers value when it addresses community needs and enhances the public sector's service delivery."
Prominent projects on display at the Smart City Expo include "Wireless Connectivity Along Inland Cycle Paths for Smart Services," funded through the Regional Strategy for Inland Areas and the ERDF 2021–2027 Regional Program. Backed by an investment of approximately €5.6 million, the project integrates the regional public ultra-broadband network - developed under the Ermes program - with the regional cycle route network.
The Region's showcase also features Gorizia's Digital Art Gallery (DAG), created through the redevelopment of the Bombi Tunnel. Spanning over 300 meters, the pathway includes nearly 100 meters lined with state-of-the-art LED displays, creating a total digital surface area of 1,000 square meters. The tunnel houses "Data Tunnel," an immersive site-specific AI installation created by artist Refik Anadol specifically for Gorizia. (9colonne)
