Zurich – “Geopolitics is a form of humanism” is the title of a special discussion featuring Lucio Caracciolo, founder and editor-in-chief of Limes, in conversation with Daniele Caramani, Professor of Comparative Politics and Director of the Department of Political Science at the University of Zurich, and holder of the Ernst B. Haas Chair at the European University Institute in Florence. The event will take place at the University of Zurich on 3 December at 6 pm. It is organised by the Italian Cultural Institute and Limes Club Switzerland. The discussion will be chaired by Pietro Meineri, President of Limes Club Switzerland, and will also feature Mario Giorgio Stefano Baldi, Consul General of Italy in Zurich, and Elisabetta Fiocchi Malaspina, Professor of Legal History at the University of Zurich. Caracciolo will argue that human rights cannot be effectively protected if they are detached from the concrete realities in which people live. Issues such as identity, historical memory, cultural traditions, strategic concerns and the profound inequalities of power between states and societies must all be taken into account in any serious reflection on human rights and on how to preserve their relevance and effectiveness over time and across borders.
