Hamburg – Writer and journalist Marco Meier will be in Hamburg on 10 February at 7 pm to present his book Ingemaus, published in both Italian and German, at the Italian Cultural Institute. The event is part of the series Italian Writers on a Journey North and will be moderated and translated by Dr Stephanie Neu.
In Ingemaus, Meier traces the origins and life story of Inge Feltrinelli, the renowned publisher and photographer. Born in 1930 as Inge Schönthal, she grew up in Essen as the daughter of a Jewish father and a non-Jewish mother. The book vividly recounts her early years, from childhood under the Nazi regime to her youth in Göttingen and her formative period in 1950s Hamburg.
During those years, Feltrinelli established herself as a highly sought-after photojournalist in what was then Germany’s most dynamic post-war media and cultural hub. She travelled extensively, photographing leading cultural figures such as Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and Simone de Beauvoir.
It was at a party at publisher Heinrich Maria Ledig-Rowohlt’s villa that she met the young Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, marking the beginning of a remarkable love story. Based on numerous conversations with Inge Feltrinelli and exclusive access to her personal archive, Meier’s book offers a comprehensive and intimate biography of one of Europe’s most fascinating cultural figures.
