Art: Intesa Sanpaolo brings Kounellis to the Grand Duchy

Luxembourg City – Starting June 3, Intesa Sanpaolo will present three major works by Jannis Kounellis from its corporate art collection in the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The pieces will be installed at the Group’s local headquarters, Intesa Sanpaolo House, which will host a series of public openings. On June 2, Italy’s Republic Day and the 50th anniversary of Intesa Sanpaolo’s presence in Luxembourg—dating back to 1976—the bank led by Carlo Messina will also display a significant work at the residence of the Italian Ambassador. Intesa Sanpaolo Bank Luxembourg, a corporate bank within the IMI Corporate & Investment Banking Division headed by Mauro Micillo, traces its origins to La Société Européenne de Banque S.A., established on June 2, 1976 as a public limited company under Luxembourg law, on the initiative of Banca Commerciale Italiana (BCI). In the summer of 1976, the year it began operating in Luxembourg, Banca Commerciale Italiana acquired Senza titolo by Jannis Kounellis, the Greek-born painter and sculptor from Piraeus (1936), later naturalised Italian and a leading figure of the Arte Povera movement, who died in Rome in 2017. Those years’ international expansion strategy went hand in hand with a strong commitment to art collecting, laying the foundations of what is now one of the most significant corporate art collections in the world. Comit’s forward-looking decision to collect art and promote exhibitions and publishing initiatives continues today through Intesa Sanpaolo’s “Progetto Cultura”. This long-term programme includes the opening of the Gallerie d’Italia museum spaces in Milan, Naples, Turin and Vicenza, as well as numerous cultural initiatives developed in collaboration with Italian and international institutions. Among them is the 2025 exhibition Viaggio in Italia. Vedute di Napoli, Roma, Firenze, Venezia e Milano, XVII–XIX secolo, hosted at Villa Vauban – Musée d’Art de la Ville de Luxembourg, featuring a substantial selection of works from the Group’s collections, further confirming Intesa Sanpaolo’s strong ties with the Grand Duchy.
