University of Turin strengthens academic ties with Japan

Tokyo – The University of Turin has taken a significant step forward in its internationalization strategy with the signing of two major cooperation agreements with Japan’s Sokendai University. The agreements were signed in Tokyo by University of Turin Rector Cristina Prandi and Sokendai President Takashi Nagata, expanding academic and scientific collaboration between the two institutions while creating new opportunities for students, researchers and faculty members. The partnership strengthens scientific ties between the Piedmont region and Japan, particularly in cutting-edge fields such as fundamental physics, climate science, astrophysics, cosmology and advanced technologies. One agreement focuses on broader academic and research cooperation, while the second establishes a framework for student mobility. The initiative stems from the University of Turin’s Department of Physics, which has built a strong international research profile through participation in some of the world’s leading scientific programs in astrophysics, cosmology, fundamental physics, climate studies and technological innovation. Through the partnership, graduate students and doctoral candidates from Turin will be able to pursue study and research opportunities within Sokendai’s network of laboratories and research institutes, widely regarded as one of Japan’s foremost scientific hubs and a leading center for advanced research in Asia. “The partnership with Sokendai is strategically important because it connects our university with one of Japan’s most innovative institutions in research training and interdisciplinary studies,” Rector Cristina Prandi said. “Its greatest value lies in the opportunities it will create for our students and doctoral researchers. They will be able to study and conduct research in an internationally recognized scientific environment, develop advanced skills, engage with different academic cultures and build networks that will be invaluable both professionally and personally.” Prandi added that the collaboration is expected to generate new mobility opportunities, joint research projects and shared educational initiatives, further strengthening the Turin–Japan connection and enhancing the international dimension of the university community.
