New York – The United Nations Headquarters is hosting The Righteous in Sport exhibition until June 26, a photographic project promoted by the Gariwo Foundation in collaboration with artist Gabriele Stabile. The New York presentation is organized together with the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations and curated by Mataeria. The exhibition tells the stories of 14 athletes and sports figures who stood up against discrimination and violence, defended human dignity and transformed sport into a tool for freedom and social change. Among them are Antonio Maglio, a pioneer of the Paralympic movement; Ferdinando Valletti, a Milan footballer deported to Auschwitz who used sport to support fellow prisoners; and Khalida Popal, an Afghan footballer who has worked to defend women’s rights and to help evacuate people fleeing Taliban rule. Developed as a relay of shared values and previously presented during the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, the project arrives in New York during the FIFA World Cup period. Although Italy will not be competing, the exhibition brings a universal message to the United Nations: sport as civic courage, inclusion and social responsibility. The initiative is part of a broader collaboration between the Gariwo Foundation and the UN Office on Genocide Prevention, focusing on countering hate speech, preventing mass atrocities and promoting individual responsibility. Within this framework, Gariwo also held a side event on June 17 titled Sport and the Gardens of the Righteous: Educating for Shared Humanity, ahead of the International Day for Countering Hate Speech on June 18.
