Almada – The Italian Cultural Institute of Lisbon is bringing celebrated artists Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella to the 43rd edition of the Almada Theatre Festival, Portugal’s oldest and most prestigious theatrical event, running from July 4 to 18.
Among the international headliners hosted by the festival, the award-winning Italian duo will perform "Fratto X," one of the most iconic productions of their career. The show will take place on Monday, July 6 at 10:00 PM on the Palco Grande at the Escola D. António da Costa in Almada, performed in Italian with Portuguese subtitles.
Working as a duo since 1987, Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella have forged an unmistakable theatrical language rooted in the seamless interplay of words, voice, body, and space. In 2018, they were awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale Theatre, cementing their status as pioneers of radical, innovative contemporary theatre.
In "Fratto X," words are continuously warped, reinvented, and transformed through Rezza’s unique vocal and physical performance, while Mastrella’s scenic habitats become a living part of the narrative. The result is a provocative performance that relies on irony, paradox, and vision to challenge social conventions, language, and power structures, offering a deeply irreverent look at the human condition. Echoing the Almada Festival's dedication to research and experimentation, "Fratto X" showcases theatre's unique ability to question the modern world through highly original forms of expression.
As part of the festival's lineup, the artists will also meet the public for an open dialogue moderated by Patrícia Cividanes on Wednesday, July 8 at 6:00 PM at the Escola D. António da Costa Esplanade. The free-admission event will offer audiences a deeper look into their creative process and a nearly forty-year artistic partnership that remains one of the most unique in European theatre.
