Seattle - The University of Udine’s fluid dynamics research team has secured double international recognition. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), one of the world's premier engineering societies, has elected Cristian Marchioli - a professor at the Italian university - as Chair of its Multiphase Flow Technical Committee. Marchioli is the first Italian scholar ever appointed to this position.
A professor of fluid dynamics in the Department of Engineering and Architecture, Marchioli will lead the committee for the next two years, shaping the strategic roadmap for the global scientific community specializing in multiphase flows. This field studies flows involving multiple phases—such as liquids, gases, and solid particles—and plays a vital role in areas ranging from energy and environmental sustainability to advanced industrial and medical technologies.
The election took place in Seattle during the committee's annual meeting. At the same event, ASME presented the prestigious ASME Fluids Engineering Award to Professor Alfredo Soldati, founder of Udine’s fluid dynamics school and current professor at the TU Wien (Vienna). The annual award honors scholars who have made outstanding lifelong contributions to research and education. Established in 1937, the committee is one of ASME's oldest bodies, driving progress across numerous engineering and applied science disciplines while uniting researchers from academia, research centers, and industry worldwide.
