The University of Pisa has reaffirmed its position as the 4th ranked university in Italy in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy.
Globally, the university holds the 211th spot, placing it near the top of the 201–300 band. Pisa's strong performance was heavily driven by its academic prestige, particularly its alumni and faculty who have received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. The institution ranked 72nd worldwide in the Alumni indicator and 67th in the Award indicator, putting it in the top quartile of all universities in its tier. Compared to 2025, the university also saw progress in Highly Cited Researchers (HiCi) and publications in Nature and Science (N&S).
“The most noticeable trend is the rapid rise of Asian universities, which - even without legacy awards - have achieved exceptionally high output in scientific production,” noted Vice Rector Giuseppe Iannaccone. “China alone now boasts over 200 universities in the top 1,000 worldwide, with several breaking into the top 100. Pisa continues to hold a strong position both nationally and within Europe based on ARWU's objective, public metrics, even as Europe's overall relative weight shifts. Ultimately, the global expansion of scientific research is a welcome development.”
